We bassets are well-known for our mild temperament, and we are notoriously good around children. But we're still dogs, and some of us just don't get along with very small kids that might tug at us, or pull our ears, or put their face up close to ours... especially when we've just been placed into a strange, new environment. Heck, some of our rescue bassets have been bounced around between so many shelters, homes, vets, and kennels that they're going to need a little space and adjustment time before you let the kids go whole hog with us. Our rescue volunteers do as best as they can to evaluate each rescue basset's temperament. But we ask if you have very small children... before you adopt any dog of any breed, be prepared to not only train the dog, but to also train your children on how to handle us! Also be prepared to supervise us at all times when we're together, especially in the first few months when we're trying to settle into our forever home. Thank you!

Minnie - 2329

Hi. My name is Minnie. I am 9 years old. I have lived with the same family since I was a puppy but due to a death in the family and circumstances they were unable to keep me any longer. I have been a house dog my whole life and I really prefer to be inside. I am housebroke. I am also very nosy and have to know what's going on all the time. I have 2 basset foster brothers here, I get along with them but I could live without them because they are young and silly, and I like to just hang out. There are also kids and cats in my foster home and I have gotten along with them well too. My foster mom says I have to sleep in a crate at night. I have never done that before but I am ok with it. I am looking for a nice quiet home to hang out and be someone's new best friend.

Daisy is a very sweet and loving spayed female about 5-6 years old. She is very gentle around small children and adults. She fit in immediately with everyone. Daisy has a heart as big as her big brown eyes and would make a great little sweet heart for any family.

Missy - 2381

Let me introduce you to Missy, a 2 ½ year old Basset. She is red and white in color with beautiful amber eyes that tug at your heart strings. She came to Basset Rescue from a shelter in Kansas where she had been for a month or more. It took a lot of combined effort from many people to get her to Colorado but she was so worth the effort. Shes such a loving girl. She follows you everywhere just to get either a pat on the head or a belly rub. Because of her past, please no kennels for her and no loud voices. Discipline for Missy only requires a firm voice. Loud voices and men in general frighten her but if treated gently she will warm up quickly. I dont know how she is with cats because I have no cats in my home. She uses the doggie door and no accidents so far. She loves to go for walks. I bought her a new harness and she does very well. She needs to lose weight, she has lost some and we are working on it. She is an alpha female so she will need to be with either a young male or by herself. She is not a barker but she will let you know if someone is around. If you are ready to give love and time to her you will get it back tenfold. She will make someone a perfect companion.

Hello, my name is Matilda. I am an 8 yr old spayed tri-colored female, up to date on all my shots and in good health. I came into rescue as a stray from a shelter, and was ready to be euthanized the next day, but the folks from Basset Hound Rescue sprung me out of jail and sent me to a foster home where I have two other hounds to play with, cool huh? My foster mom says I am a real sweetie and quite a pretty gal. I rather like being close her right now, so I follow her around the house to stay nice and close. I cuddle with her on the couch and love to have my ears and belly rubbed. I love to go for walks, but do pull some on a leash. I am really laid back, not very vocal, but do have a wonderful low bark. I ride well in a car, and get along very nicely with the other two resident hounds and other dogs, but can be intimidated by another dog if they try to tell me off. Cant say how I am with cats, as there are none in this household. I am potty trained with a dog door. Please do not crate me, as I will try to get out with the result being a skinned up nose, ouch? I will need a very secure fenced yard because until I feel safe at your house, I will probably try to escape when you leave to find you. I only left my foster moms yard on the second day there, but now I feel safe and know she will be coming home after work to see me. I cannot tell you what my past life was like, but my foster mom thinks Im pretty special and will make a new family very happy. So, if you are willing to give me a chance, I will be sure to give you lots of love and kisses in return.

I'm very sweet and get along with everyone, including other dogs and cats...the more the merrier. I love getting and giving attention and hope that someone will love me the way I deserved to be loved. If that's you, I promise you won't be sorry if you pick me!

Hi my name is Hank. I'm a 3.5 year old, tri-colored, neutered male. I'm not just another handsome face, I'm caught up on all of my shots and I'm very healthy too. I might be a little shy at first but don't let that fool you, after a couple of treats and a walk (my most favorite thing to do) I'll be your best friend for life. I have to admit that I'm not that crazy about kids. I just don't understand them and I don't like sharing the attention. I do like other dogs and I think cats are really cool, so if you think you have room in your heart for me I definitely have room in mine for you!

Crumpet - 2401

Crumpet, 4 yo neutered tri-colored male - Crumpet is a very loving and sweet dog. He does not bark, he rides in the car well and gets along with other dogs. He can share food bowls if you leave 2 bowls out. He gets along well with my daughter and her friends who are middle school age. He meets new people well. He can spend time in a crate if he has to, but he prefers to sleep on my daughter's bed. He does not beg for food and does not get in the garbage either. He doesn't jump on furniture and will get off if you tell him. He is very alert and will give you a warning bark if someone comes in. If you give him a quick hello in a gentle voice he is fine.
He does not like to be startled.

Let me introduce Lucy to you. Lucy is an 8-9 yr old lemon & white female, up to date on all her shots and in good health, and weighs in at 46 lbs. Lucy's owner volunteered many years for BHR, but sadly passed away last Feb., so Lucy came back to BHR. If you are looking for an extremely sweet, laid back older gal, Lucy is the one for you. Lucy fit right in with the other two resident hounds, and two big Labradoodles on the day she arrived at my house, she also enjoys meeting and greeting all humans. She is completely potty trained with a dog door, but my guess is she would let you know if she needs to go out, even if you do not have a dog door. She is not at all vocal, loves to be petted, and of course loves those belly rubs and loves going to the dog park and walks great on a leash. I dont know how she is with cats, as there are none in my household. You will need to give her little rump a boost into the car, or onto higher grounds, as it hurts her a little if you try to pick her up from the belly. She does not mind being bathed, brushed, and sits calmly at the groomers while getting her nails cut. She is a sensitive about her ears, both cleaning inside and outside, so take care while cleaning them. She would prefer to be left alone while she eats a special greenie, or the like, but is fine when given treats, even with four other dogs right next to her, and can be fed in the same room with the other resident hounds, but does not like it if they come near her while she eats, she will warn them to stay away. This beautiful hound would do best in a calm adult household.

Hello everyone this is Lucy Lu, she is a 3 year old beautiful tri-colored Basset girl. Lucy is one of those wonderful dogs that loves everyone she meets. Lucy has bin in and out of BHR for 2 years now, the poor thing has bin in 4 different homes, Lucy had bin a victim of a series of unfortunate events with her new owners moving or just not having enough time for a dog and so on. Since Lucy came to our house she has bin just wonderful, she loves to play with her K9 friends and has lots of energy. She loves to snuggle and just be with you at all times. Lucy gets along with children of all ages, she is spayed up to date on her shots and in good health. Yes, Lucy is potty trained. Lucy needs to go to a home with another dog, because if she gets lonely she starts barking and that was the reason why she came back to BHR again. Lucy really loves treats and belly rubs. We would love to keep her, but already have 2 dogs and three is a crowed. Lucy is very sweet and gentle, so if you think you have some time to spend with Lucy, please give us a call!

My owners had to move and couldn't take me along, so now I am looking for my forever home. I am a very sweet girl, who loves other dogs, children, I don't even mind cats! Well, she came to us named Daisy, but quickly became Upsy Daisy because of her sunny, cheerful, snuggly personality. She is a very thin 10 month old. Very energetic and puppyish and very smart. She knows no basic obedience but is really, really, smart and will learn quickly. She is completely housebroken with a dog door. Great with other dogs, completely non-dominant. Good with cats and curious about them. May be a bit too rambunctious for smaller kids (might knock them over jumping up on them) but would be a perfect dress-up or walking/exploring companion for an older kid. Rides well in the car. Walks well on the leash and stays around and comes when called when off leash. She is so young she still needs to chew, but has not damaged anything except a roll of tape at our house and vastly prefers Nylabones to other stuff to chew on. Barks and whines for about ten minutes when left alone in the house but stops after that. Very athleticshe can easily jump on top of a three foot high hot tub, but has not tried to jump our four foot fence. A wonderful dog, just waiting for nourishing and nurturing.

Hello Ya'all please come and meet Conrad. Conrad is a 5 year old tri-colored neutered Basset Hound.
Conrad came to us from a shelter where he got left behind by his previous owner. Conrad is a very sweet boy who loves attention and get his belly rubbed. Conrad is very friendly with other dogs and loves to be around people, he get's along with everyone he meets, he doesn't even mind cats, he just ignores them. Conrad is potty trained and knows how to use a doggie door, he is up to date on all of his shots. He has a weakness in his rear leg that we are still evaluating. Right now it is difficult for him to do stairs. He loves to go for walks and we think the regular exercise is strengthening his leg. Conrad is an easy going wonderful Basset, very much a Gentleman, just looking for a family that could love him forever. He loves to snuggle up to you, so if you think you have some love to give, please come and meet Conrad, you will not regret it!

I am spayed and up to date on my shots and in great health. However, I do not like to be around cats. I am a great little girl with a terrific personality. Because I have the nose of a hound dog, I do like to counter cruise if there is food within my reach. I love to play all day long with my K9 friends or the children in my foster home. Hello everybody please come and meet Buster. Buster is a 1 year old Tri-Colored neutered up to date on his shots male. Even though he does have some brown in his Beautiful face he is mostly white and black. Buster is a sweet little guy who is full of energy and very inquisitive. Buster came to us from a shelter where his previous owners just dumped him because they did not have the time to train him properly. Buster gets along very well with all of our dogs and loves to play. He likes children of all ages, we are not sure about cats since we don't own any. Buster would do well in a home with or without dogs as long as you have time to spend with him. He loves to cuddle up in your lap and give you sweet kisses on the nose. He is also a bed bug and would love to sleep on the bed with you. Buster needs a good home with lots of attention and affection. He is a very loving and sweet dog.
