We bassets are well-known for our mild temperament, and we are notoriously good around children. But we're still dogs, and some of us just don't get along with very small kids that might tug at us, or pull our ears, or put their face up close to ours... especially when we've just been placed into a strange, new environment. Heck, some of our rescue bassets have been bounced around between so many shelters, homes, vets, and kennels that they're going to need a little space and adjustment time before you let the kids go whole hog with us. Our rescue volunteers do as best as they can to evaluate each rescue basset's temperament. But we ask if you have very small children... before you adopt any dog of any breed, be prepared to not only train the dog, but to also train your children on how to handle us! Also be prepared to supervise us at all times when we're together, especially in the first few months when we're trying to settle into our forever home. Thank you!

Jack - 2361
|
Officially named Jumpin' Jack Flash, Jack is a 1 year old tri-color Basset who has been neutered, is up on all of his shots and faithfully takes his dewormer on the first of every month. Jack was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease, but is doing great now that he's on his prescription food and medication. Because his first year was such a rough one and his IBD was causing him to literally be starving to death - even though he ate like a horse - he is a stinker when it comes to food. He gets scolded for trying to get in the garbage sometimes and will gobble up anything that hits the floor - whether it's good for him or not. He's also a classic Basset - and exhibits 'selective listening' when it suits him or he gets a good scent and decides he would rather follow that.
Jack does take Tylan Powder and Prednisone with each meal. He's still a little underweight but we're working hard to gain the 8-10 pounds the vet recommends. He has enough energy though - and routinely does his "Flash Gordon" imitation, streaking from one end of the house to the other - until he collapses in to a heap on to his pillow. He also must eat the Hills ZD Ultra dog food - which can be purchased with a prescription at PetSmart or directly from the vet.
Jack loves fuzzy toys with squeakers (I can't stress this enough), riding in the car and taking walks. He's really very good about not jumping on the sofa or bed and prefers his favorite pillow in his corner. He'll never be one of those Bassets with their tummies almost dragging on the ground - lean and sleek - that's Jack. He's excellent with little kids - we have nieces that are 7 and 2 - and he will let them hug him and play with his ears - but be a little careful when there is food around as he has been known to snatch it right out of little hands that happen to be mouth level. He's lived with a cat his whole life and other than sometimes mistaking her for a toy ( or his best friend) he's good as gold with her. Jack regularly has play dates with a dachshund in the family, and gets along well with my son's yellow lab, and I think would be in heaven with another dog as a companion. He might be a little weird but he also loves going to visit his vet ( I think he has a little crush on her ) and going to get a bath. We've been cleaning his ears since the day he came home so he's absolutely willing to sit and have that done.

Lucy - 1638
|
Hi. Let me introduce Lucy to you. Lucy is about 8y old and is white & lemon colored. Lucy's owner volunteered many years for BHR, but sadly passed away last Feb., so Lucy came back to BHR. If youre looking for an extremely sweet, laid back older gal, Lucy is the one for you. Lucy fit right in with the other two resident hounds, and two big Labradoodles on the day she arrived at my house, she also enjoys meeting and greeting all humans. She is completely house trained&I have a doggie door, but my guess is she would let you know if she needs to go out, even if you dont have a dog door. She is spayed and up-to-date on her shots. She is not at all vocal, loves to be petted, and of course loves those belly rubs. She really walks nicely on a leash, and even knows how to sit. She rides great in a car, does great at the dog park, and likes to cuddle with you. You will need to give her little rump a boost into the car, or onto higher grounds, as it hurts her a little if you try to pick her up from the belly. She doesnt mind being bathed, brushed, or having her ears cleaned, and sits calmly at the groomers while getting her nails cut. She would prefer to be left alone while she eats a special greenie, or the like, but is fine when given treats, even with four other dogs right next to her. As you can see, this beautiful I Love Lucy hound will make a great addition to any family, even a family with older children.

Gracie - 2248
|
My name is Gracie. I am about 6 years old. I was rescued from the shelter in Lamar by my new friends in Basset rescue. They say they can help me find a new home. I really like older people. Children under 12 make me nervous. I would love to find a home where the older people would love me like a child. I just would prefer no young children in the house, because even if they love me I am not sure about them. Soif you can give me a forever home and love for the rest of my life, I have lots of love to give back. Ill be waiting for your call.

Rosie - 2334
|
Hello everyone this is Rosie, Rosie is a 5y old spayed red & white female. Rosie can be shy around Men, but warms up quickly if they treat her nice and speak softly, we think she may have bin abused as a puppy, Rosie came to us when she was 1y old. The whole family is moving and it breaks our heart, but we can't take Rosie with us, so she needs to find a good home. Rosie doesn't like to be in a crate, so no crates please. Rosie is a very loving sweet girl who gets along with children of all ages. We put her through some training classes when she was younger, she could use some freshening up but is very well behaved in the house. Rosie is up to date on her shots and in good health, she is potty trained. Rosie loves to play and run through the house. She likes attention and would love to have her belly rubbed. Rosie likes sunbathing or just hanging around the house. Sorry we don't know about cats. Come and meet Rosie you won't regreat it.

Varmit/Missy - 2381
|
Let me introduce you to Missy, a 2 ½ year old Basset Beagle. She is red and white in color with beautiful amber eyes that tug at your heart strings. She came to Basset Rescue from a shelter in Kansas where she had been for a month or more. It took a lot of combined effort from many people to get her to Colorado but she was so worth the effort. Shes such a loving girl. She follows you everywhere just to get either a pat on the head or a belly rub. Because of her past, please no kennels for her and no loud voices. Discipline for Missy only requires a firm voice. Loud voices and men in general frighten her but if treated gently she will warm up quickly. I dont know how she is with cats because I have no cats in my home. She uses the doggie door and no accidents so far. She loves to go for walks. I bought her a new harness and she does very well. She needs to lose weight, she has lost some and we are working on it. She is an alpha female so she will need to be with either a young male or by herself. She is not a barker but she will let you know if someone is around. If you are ready to give love and time to her you will get it back tenfold. She will make someone a perfect companion.

Winston - 1876
Adoption PendingAdoption Pending
|
Winston is a 12 year old tri-color male in great health. He is quite gentle and extremely compatible with other dogs and older children. Winston is very affectionate and loves attention, but he's also happy to curl up at your feet when you're reading or hanging out with friends. He also enjoys going for walks. He sleeps contentedly on his doggie bed, but will gladly lay on the sofa if you put him there. Winston is house trained and uses a doggie door. He's neutered, current on all shots, and has no health problems. In fact, he's in exceptional physical condition for his age. If you're in the mood for a laid-back, affectionate companion, Winston will be a great addition to your home.

Red is a very big beautiful happy boy who was found as a stray. He has been in his foster home for a month while he waited to be neutered. He has gotten along wonderfully with three mid size bassets and three cats even though he is twice their size . We think he's is about 6 as he is very playful and has lots of energy. He's a very sweet boy, eager to please and always ready for a cuddle or a belly rub. He loves squeaky toys but unlike some he doesnt insist on ripping out the squeaky bits. He is great with other dogs and has no dominance issues. He's great at using our dog door, and is really good in the car. He is in good health and up to date on all his shots. Red will be a wonderful dog in his forever home.

Yeah, I know this picture makes me look like Snaggletooth the cat. But that's OK because I like cats and get along well with them. I also like other dogs. And people. And couches and food'oh, I like lots of things. What I don't like is looking for another home but I am sure that somebody will have room for a cute, housebroken, non chewing dog like me.

Jessie - 2379
Adoption PendingAdoption Pending

My name is Jessie and I'm a beautiful one year old tri colored girl. I love to snuggle on the couch with you and sleep in bed with you at night (especially kids). I even like to be under the covers and have my own pillow! I love to run and play in the back yard. A home with another basset or a dog about my size to play with me would be perfect because I don't like to be alone. I like to play with little dogs too but I play way too rough with them and would not do good in a home that has little dogs. I am very, very sweet and give lots of kisses. I am also great with kids and cats. I'm house trained too, but you have to remember to let me out because I don't bark when I need to go. I was rescued from a breeder that kept me in a cage with very big dogs so I'm still a little afraid of new dogs and new people but I warm up really quick. I am spayed and up to date on all my shots so all you have to do is love me. I have so much love to give and would love someone to take me home forever.
